Excursions

Field trips and excursions offer children wonderful first-hand experiences to c omplement student learning in the classroom. Students respond creatively and academically when they have been involved in real life, relevant experiences. When excursions are planned a notice will go home outlining the details of the trip. At Hyland Heights we are pleased to offer a full range of varied experiences to supplement student learning. We appreciate the additional commitment staff volunteer to coordinate these activities.

It is our expectation that each class will have the opportunity to supplement their learning experience outside the classroom at least once throughout the year. Traditionally at Hyland Heights we have offered many students the opportunity to participate in over-night excursions. Our grade 7 students attend a three day excursion related to Geography & Science in the spring, and our grade 8's learn the workings of Canadian Government on a four day trip to Ottawa in the spring. Junior classes have experienced overnight trips to the zoo, overnight camps at Waterloo University and day trips to Medieval Times. These trips will be reviewed and decisions for this year confirmed.

"BRING IT TO HYLAND HEIGHTS"
Often programs are supplemented by bringing the "experts" to Hyland Heights. A range of programs, shows and exhibitions are sometimes arranged for presentations at our school. The format of utilizing a number of classes allows us to keep the cost of these additional programs to a minimal. Costs for these programs sometimes is handled by utilizing "fund raising" dollars while at other times a portion is requested of families.
