Hyland Heights is a JK to 8 school located in the town of Shelburne. It serves Shelburne and the surrounding rural communities of Amaranth, Riverview, Melancthon and Corbetton. Approximately 20% of our students are bussed. Most students graduating from Hyland Heights do not have far to go when moving on to high school. Centre Dufferin District High School is next door, sharing property with our school - and often former students will walk over for a quick visit.

Hyland Heights opened its doors in 1989, replacing the Shelburne Junior School which had served the town and surrounding area for over 100 years. In 1906 the Shelburne Junior School (then named the Shelburne Public School) was presented with a beautiful bell made of tin, silver and copper. The bell was presented by the Victoria Literary Society, with the inscription “I summon young Canada to prepare for citizenship”. This old school bell currently graces our front entrance, and is a constant reminder of the school's past.

During the school year of 1994-95 the Shelburne Junior School caught fire, and was gone forever from our community. Following the fire, Hyland Heights staff and students put together a tribute production in honour of the old school. This production was entitled “The Trails of Time”, where students were able to share some of their memories (and those of their parents) of the old school, through a variety of skits, songs, and dances. A picture of the Shelburne Junior School resides in our front hall reminding us of past traditions.

At Hyland Heights with Parental support, we strive to create a safe environment that promotes; INDIVIDUAL GROWTH, ACADEMIC SUCCESS and SOCIAL VALUES that lead to the development of a positive self image in our students.

These words are also found in our front hallway. At Hyland Heights staff, students and parents work hard together, making our school a great place to be.
